The name originates from the period when the ground begins to thaw and earthworms reappear, signaling the approach of spring.

November's full Beaver moon shot through strings of holiday lights.

The Beaver Moon is one of the traditional names for the full moon that occurs in November. These names for full moons often have roots in Native American, Colonial American, or other traditional North American naming systems tied to the seasons, nature, or cultural events.

The name "Beaver Moon" is thought to have originated from the Algonquin people. November was the time of year when beavers built their winter dams, and the Beaver Moon marked the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, ensuring a supply of warm winter furs.

Lunar Spectrum (2023)

The moon's appearance can change color due to a phenomenon called "lunar or moon illusion." This effect is primarily caused by the moon's position relative to the horizon, the Earth's atmosphere, and our perception of size. When the moon is near the horizon, it appears larger and can take on a reddish or orange hue due to the Earth's atmosphere scattering shorter wavelengths of light, like blue and green, while allowing longer wavelengths, such as red and orange, to pass through and reach our eyes. This gives the moon a warm, colorful glow. As the moon rises higher in the sky, it appears smaller, and the color may return to its usual white or gray appearance.
